We Are All Fruit Flies: The David Suzuki Story.
... as me, to learn and take action for our environment. His latest talks deal with the human race’s inability to remember the inter-connection between us and the environment. The practice of “economy (which he links to a form of brain damage) normalizes the idea that we indeed can not afford to protect the environment. This leaves us to ponder another thing, an oxymoron: human nature. Suzuki however holds hope. He believes that although the connection has been lost between human and nature the fact that economics is a human creation remains and therefore can be controlled by humans. In September 1990 David’s radio program “It’s a matter of survival” which received wide public support and as many as 17,000 letters each more urgent than its successor. After this, he and his new wife, Tara Cullis as well as other concerned environmentalists formed what is now referred to as the David Suzuki Foundation. The Foundation was what the letters were asking for, a new solutions-based organization. The Foundation has taken on many projects throughout the world including: Working with the Kayapo people of the lower Amazon, the Ainu of Japan, and with O.R.E.W.A Columbia. In Canada the have worked with the Hesquiat people on the west coast of Vancouver Island as well as numerous fisheries reports and have also attended, as a big influence, the Kyoto conference on climate change. As he once said, “What we do to the environment, we do to ourselves”. A quote that harkens back to the saying,“you get what you put into it”. If we were to create and run machines to do the work the environment is already doing for free it would cost the world billions of dollars. When we pollute the air, we breathe in this pollution, pollution that causes cancers, breathing defects and lung disorders. This is not the environment getting to us; this is us hurting ourselves. This type of reckless self destruction goes on everyday and the apathy is overwhelming. David Suzuki’s fight for the recognition of the importance of the environment is on going as he continues to lead the charge. The normal response he gets from politicians is that they can not only concentrate on the environment, they have many other things to deal with first such as health care. This annoys David, many of the health problems today could be avoided by paying better attention to the environment. It shows politicians aren’t listening to the numerous health care groups and citizens of their ridings who hold strong the belief that everything is affected immensely by the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the communities we live in. All are affected by what goes into the environment. These are the issues that affect us all and that David Suzuki deals with trying to find a solution. During CBC’s Greatest Canadian special, Suzuki was voted the Greatest Living Canadian finishing 5th on the list. This shows how greatly he is appreciated within the Canadian public. As well as wide public recognition, Suzuki’s foundation is now one of the leading in the world and doesn’t look to be over taken anytime soon. He also is host of...
