When Chelsea and her boyfriend Bill Ray decided to go on a trip to Europe, they went to visit Chelsea’s parents, Norman and Ethel, before they left. It worked best for them to leave Bill Ray’s son, Billy Ray Junior, with Norman and Ethel while they were away. Over the two weeks Chelsea and Bill Ray were gone, Norman and Billy Ray Junior bonded and became very close with each other. Upon the return of Chelsea and Bill Ray, Chelsea observed the friendship Billy Ray Junior and her father had formed and she became very jealous. The reason for jealousy was because Chelsea never got to have a real relationship with her Norman and she was his daughter. Fortunately, just like Hagar, Norman told Chelsea something she had longed to hear. When Chelsea made a point of showing her father that she could back flip into the water, in a way she proved that she could do it. Norman was very proud of Chelsea and he told her that she was a good daughter. Then, when saying goodbye Chelsea called Norman “Dad”. By calling Norman dad Chelsea was able to redeem herself for all the years she lost. The situations between Hagar and Marvin and Norman and Chelsea were both eventually resolved with the stories. John Shipley was the second son born to Hagar and her husband Bram. John was very special to Hagar, and therefore she treated him much better than Marvin. Because Hagar’s mother died giving birth to her, and the birth of John was much easier, it brought them close right from the day John was born. Hagar and John were also close because she saw John as a Currie and she knew her father, Jason Currie, would be proud of him. Eventually Hagar and John became more involved with John’s girlfriend, Arlene Simmons, which led to John’s death. Because John died it made Hagar realize that in reality she always liked Marvin more. When Chelsea and were going to visit her parents they asked if Billy Ray Junior could stay with them. Although Norman was not happy with the idea, Ethel was thrilled and was looking forward to the company. Billy Ray Junior was not excited at all because he was used to the city life and “picking up chicks”. Despite Billy Ray Junior and Norman’s doubts towards the end of the stay with the Thayer’s, Billy Ray Junior and Norman were inseparable. They would go fishing and swear at everything together. Norman almost even thought of Billy Ray Junior as a second son. When Chelsea came back to Golden Pond, this made her very upset and jealous.
