Although alternative rock music was made in the 1960’s, it didn’t become widely known until college radio stations began to play it in the 80’s. This is where Alternative rock began its rounds, and actually became truly popular when it morphed into a type of grunge. From then on, other types of music have been contributing to alternative rock. In the late 80’s, the music was becoming extremely popular on radio stations and shows such as MTV all across the country. When Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind came out, alternative became mainstream. After that, bands such as Metallica, Ai DiFranco, and Oasis were misplaced in the category. “Many people despise the term Alternative Music because everything under the sun is now labeled alternative music causing the term to actually become a term describing popular music,” said an employee at Silver Dragon Records in 1993.
