They are teased for not having new shoes, and are starving because of the lack of food. While reading this book I’ve learned so much about Irish culture and the hardships experienced during this time period. I’ve never studied Irish culture and was shocked by the treatment of the poor and the lack of food, clothes and homes for those with little or no money. I can relate to Angela’s character, she is so smart in such a quiet way. She would do anything to protect her family and is very strong, and determined, much like myself. This novel is a true story written about Frank McCourts life. He is expressive beyond words, and makes the reader feel captivated by this family’s experiences. So far ...
