...t he is going to do with a lot of free space and time he begins his trek towards the other nearest rock pool, in a wandering search for more company than his shadow can provide him with. A lone flock of gulls glide in the light breeze that lingers around the beach, searching for a place to roost. After stealing numerous chips and fish and upsetting the balance of a little girls ice cream, if it weren’t for the innocence of nature, these surprisingly graceful birds wouldn’t be able to sleep at night. Now the sun has called it a day, and so slowly retires into the sea to rest and calls upon the moon to guard it until sunrise and the beach pulls up the tide slowly like a deep silk covered duvet. And as darkness falls so does the scenery. Then there is beauty in darkness. You just can’t see it. Dawn breaks. A quiet thoomp is heard. Followed by quickly another one. It’s getting faster and louder. Still faster and still louder. Then slowly, a helicopter drifts into view, and a few minutes later, the beasts innards give a short whine as the rotors come lazily to a halt. A man steps out, in formal luxury attire, followed closely by a servant, his secretary, poised to take notes from her master. After recovering his composure from the cramped flight, he speaks to her without acknowledging her, “I think I’ve fallen in love”. With a sigh in her voice she answers, “but sir, the environmentalists would be up in arms, the island council would never give planning permission, for fear of damaging there tourist industry”. “Everyone has there price Sybil”,” This banana economy has nothing on what I can offer, the counsellors will grateful of this hotel complex, for the cookies I will give them for it and the money it will bring in for the locals that aren’t evicted”. Crunch! “Sybil, there seams to be an ice cream wrapper stuck to my foot”. “I think that’s what it is” she replies supportingly. “Well?”. ”What can do for you sir?” “Pick it up Sybil!” he snapped. “I don’t know why people come to this beach, there’s nothing on here for them to enjoy, and that is why I am placing a large hotel complex that spans most of this beach, right on top of it.” He continues thoughtfully: “It’s a good thing that the beach has litter on it, the...
