From the beginning of time, Americans have been afraid and feared bringing Asians to the United States, they thought it, “would lead to the permanence and growth,” of their communities (Constable 1995: 178). This is just one example of racial profiling. In actuality, Americans wanted to bring Asians here for cheap labor, but they did not want them to create families or have lives over here. Basically, they where classified as “aliens ineligible to have citizenship (Constable 1995: 178).” This clearly depicts the United States, at this time was not the melting pot it rejected those whom were not white. In all honesty, the United States was doing as much as possible too keep Asians out. In fact, many antimiscegenation laws were put in place, in response to keep colored from marrying whites. Yet, the question lingers is why was there this mass creation of laws against those of color? The answer lies in the fact, which goes back to human nature; this concept of fear is what drives us to make our decisions. Constable writes that, “the fear is that the incoming group threatens the US by draining resources and/or constituting a threat to citizens’ jobs, health, or morality (Constable 1995: 187).” This all ties into the overall theme of these so-called “mail order brides,” that in a sense they still have to suffer many prejudices coming into the United States. On the other hand, since the early 1900’s the United States has grown drastically and become a much more diverse country and began accepting those of color a lot more after the Second World War. Still, Constable goes into the details of how hard it is for visas to be given to these colored women marrying white American men. She goes on to explain, that basically the United States questions these women’s motives for coming over and here and these men’s reasoning for bringing them here.
