If you read close enough you can detect some sympathy and even concern in Holden’s tone when he relates her story to Stradlater. You can also detect a sense of him being offended after he remarks on what a lousy childhood Jane had… “That didn’t interest Stradlater, though. Only very sexy stuff interested him.”(Pg.32). So why is he so interested in Jane? What it is about her that strikes him so? I believe it’s the fact that he feels that Jane has a more pitiful life than his own.
