... in 1944, in 1949; it was adopted by the ANC. Nelson in 1952, was elected the volunteer-in-chief of the 1952 Defiance Campaign. Which then he went around the country organizing resistance to discrimatory legislation. By 1952, his friend Oliver Tambo and himself had opened the first legal black firm in the country. Nelson was the president of both the ANC and he was the deputy national president. A petition was sent forward to get Mandela removed off of attorneys but the Supreme Court refused it. After the Sharpeville massacre in 1960, the ANC was banned. He was detained until1961 when he led a campaign underground for a new national convention. In 1962, Mandela left the country for military training, but on his way back he was arrested for leaving the country illegally. In his trial he took the part of his own defense. He was convicted and put into jail for 5 years. While serving his five years, he was charged, in the Rivonia trial, with sabotage and sentenced to life in prison.
