For one there are still people that care about his well being because the song says “you” many times, ex “you all assume/ I’m safe here in my room” (lines 4 and 5) He also realizes that he is the one with the problem, not everyone else, “Cause inside I realize/ that I’m the one confused” ( lines 9 and 10). We also see that this is not the first time he has made an attempt at his life, because of the common use of the word “again” and the fact that words like “battles” are pluralized. Sadly we know that at the end of the song he finally pulls the trigger , line 49 “And this is how it ends” The literary devices and structure of “Breaking the Habit” are not anything special. On the structure side it follows the most common form for songs. The first and fourth stanzas are six lines long. All the bridges (an intro before the chorus) are four lines long, and the chorus has 9 lines. Secondly there are not many literary devices that do much for the song. To the great exception of the veritable mine field of metaphors which make the song (as I said before) hard to truly understand with out spending the time to break it down. But, this turns out to be a good thing, since the only real part of the song you can understand the first time you hear it is the chorus, so, like any good tune, you can relate it to your own life. Lines 8 and 9 “I don’t want to be the one/ the battles always choose” could be related to a conflict within your self.
