Absolutism good for growth of nations

The idea expressed by King James I of England shows that absolute rulers claimed that they had the divine right to rule. Monarchs believed during this period that God granted their power to them. That is why they believed they had total and absolute control over the state. As awful as it may sound, it is definitely a good thing they believed this. If people did not believe in divine right, governments probably would have been more democratic. As good as democratic governments are, nothing gets done in a short amount of time. "Although the forms of state- monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy- were united in English government, the powers of the government were separated from one another" (Doc 6). As written by Montesquieu, democratic governments have many checks and balances; this is why is takes so long for change to occur in democratic societies. The ideas of King Louis XIV of France explain why things were accomplished under absolutism.
