Survey of Sexual Behavior of Americans
...thought about to determine sexual behaviors of Americans. One technique was a sex survey over the phone. The only problem of a sex survey over the phone was to try to get people to listen instead of hanging up, or if the participant was near a parent or kid, they would not participate. Another technique was a sex survey by mail. A problem with that technique was that questions had to be self-explanatory, and many people would not participate because they could not simply understand the questions. The strength of this survey was that the men did a face-to-face survey in which all responses were kept private and confidential. Another major strength was that they did a random sampling of participants based on address, so the interviewers had no idea who the person was they were interviewing. This reading was great and explained in detail the steps the researchers went through to try to get a truthful answer from many participants. The weakness of this reading about this survey is still the validity of the participants response. If there were to be a question that a participant felt uncomfortable about, there is a very likely chance that they would either lie about it or not give a response at all. Telling a lie or not responding at all can disrupt the survey process as a whole. There is an unlikely chance that you can determine a persons sexual behaviors through a survey of any sort. Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, and Michaels show how a survey about sexual behaviors can be socially constructed. Social construction refers to the process of how a group of people can decide appropriate and not appropriate behavior. From the results of this survey, the researchers can decide or give meaning to different aspects of sexuality. The researchers can also determine how people feel about sex and who can have sex. They can also decide what people think is appropriate to show and also the things that are not appropriate to make public. After receiving the results from the survey many of the researchers started to question what behaviors people are participating in now-a-days. The researchers ideas started to change and were constructed through the results of others. The behaviors people participated in were deemed unacceptabl...
