...aggers. They were the 15th century bullock dagger, and the 14th century rondel dagger. Sometimes, people could hide daggers in walking sticks. Lances were for knights on horseback to knock off the enemy knight. They used the lance for battles and jousting. “The jousting knight uses a lance to knock his opponent from the horse. It is second only to the sword as a knight’s weapon, and is used in battle or tournaments.” (Knight-Meyr) A very unusual weapon was the bola. It was a spiked ball on a short chain that is attached to a wooden handle. The ball reached high speeds when swung and delivered forceful, crushing blows. Long-rang weapons were used in battle, but were more discreet and could be used from a distance. The long-range weapons are the crossbow, longbow and short bow. The cross bow was a load and fire weapon made of wood and iron. Crossbow strings were made of twisted cord. First, soldiers had to put the arrow on a string attached to the bow, then they had to load it by turning the handles and last, shoot by pulling the trigger. This was very “hard to load and easy to shoot.” (Michael K.) The long bow was about six feet long or bigger and was one of the most useful weapons. It was carved from one piece of wood. These weapons required excellent skill. The short bow was about half the size of the long bow. A certain weapon to attack the castle with was flaming arrows, which can catch the castle on fire. The cross bow, was probably more useful than the long bow, because the long bow is much faster to load than the arrow on the crossbow. The shields were for protection of the knight. They protected the knight from the arrows flying at them and kept him safe from being fatally hit by them. Some shields were as big as the knight's body, because they would protect them completely. Knights with bows and arrows mostly used the larger shields. Some were half the size of the knight, but as could also be as heavy as the big one. There were small ones that were very light. Knights without bows and arrows used the medium and small shields. There were different designs for some of the Medieval shields and each design had a name for the group the knight was in. They did that so the knight, his enemies, and his allies would be able to identify each other in battle. Ea...
