Senior Geography Project! Australia preliminary course requirement

...n Hurstville city council). Furthermore, this SGP will show adequate processing of this data collected. However due to the miniscule size of this project (in comparison to larger projects in Australia), no sources could be found in the State Library, Government departments and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Samples for the questionnaire were chosen as follows: a wide variety of ages spread over survey times, outside the main shopping area and the close areas nears the site. I conducted a total of 32 surveys and graphed them, to form the latter part of this SGP. Below is a graph of where my sample lived. Environmental impacts: While I was observing the site, a question occurred to me in my thoughts: what are the environmental impacts of these apartments and are there many people concerned? I decided to ask this in my questionnaire and the results are as follows: It is clear that 29 out of 32, people agree that there will be environmental impacts and 24 out of those 29 agree that it will be destructive to the environment. This led to my assessment of the environment. What are the main types of pollution to arise from the creation of these apartments? I concluded that 3 types of pollution will be in effect and another effect called shadowing will also, to a large extent, impact on the environment. These three types are air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution. Furthermore these forms of pollution will be assessed below. Air pollution: While I was at the site, I observed the air impacts of producing little Hong Kong. The origins of the air pollution fell into two categories: the construction of the apartments and the effect of the people using the apartments (after their construction). I found that during the construction the main air pollutants were the air emissions from diesel engines: that is the cranes, bulldozers and other construction equipment and also the indirect pollution caused by electricity use. These pollutants are carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and other volatile organic compounds, which are themselves greenhouse gases, which will ultimately damage the environment. The effect of people using the apartments, (after their construction) on the air originates from smoking (although limited), car use and the indirect pollution caused by electricity use. These include carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane and other smaller harmful gases. Water pollution: There are many water related pollutants which will need attention by the government and the developers, Sydney land holdings. There are many different polluting effects including vehicle oil leaks, synthetic rubber compounds on the road through the guttering system, including heavy metals (Lead, etc.). Also issues of the consumers including: waste disposal i.e. littering, should be properly conducted (thrown in waste disposal bins) and also sewage and other lifestyle, related issues should be carefully managed. Car emissions, if of high levels can contaminate water environments as they dissolve in the atmosphere (in rain clouds) and precipitate down into water environments. Noise pollution: To a large extent, noise pollution will be a factor as the increase in the population of Hurstville, will definitely increase the total use of cars and transport in Hurstville which will in turn creates noise. Most of the noise from vehicles will be from brakes mufflers and engines. It is also important to note that during construction, the machines used will generate high levels of noise pollution especially to the surrounding neighbours. One such woman told me, during my survey that she was ‘hurt and appalled to hear that (she) may never sleep a quiet night after it (little Hong Kong apartments) has been built’ (Mrs. Green local of Hurstville). Furthermore due to this lady’s concern, I formulated a new issue regarding the apartments, on safety. Safety: The thoughtful lady posed an important question to me: What if this increase in traffic leads to an increase in the road toll? Although this is not a question about environmental impact, it is an important question as it assesses the safety of the locals. In my questionnaire, I asked the sample this question and 93.75% of the sample agreed that the road toll is something people should be concerned about. This is very concerning as if it is true it is very dangerous to the locals risking lives. Shadowing: Shadowing is an important and subtle impact on the locals. It involves the sh...
