...n believes Injun Joe, but at the trial when Tom says that he saw Injun Joe kill doc Robinson, Injun Joe jumps out of a window to escape. This leaves Tom with a bit of fright because a known killer is on the loose that tom just accused of murder. This problem is solved at the end of the novel when Injun Joe dies from starvation after the cave is locked up. The story line in this novel is very simple, the adventures of a young boy in a small Missouri town along the Mississippi river. At the very beginning of the novel, we get an idea of how Tom works; he is a con-artist. He tricks his friend Jim into whitewashing a fence that his aunt made his wash because he skipped school and got into a fight. He tells Jim how fun whitewashing is and Jim does his job for him. While at McDougal’s cave, Tom and Becky get lost and get chased by Injun Joe. While the town is searching for Tom and Becky, They are looking for a way out. Searches are given up and finally, Tom and Becky get out and the cave is locked up with Injun Joe still inside. He eventually starves to death, and a week later, Huck and Tom go back and find a box of gold. I believe that the plot in this Novel is fairly realistic for the time period. During the 1800’s a lot of kids living in the midwest would probably skip school and go on treasure hunts. The central character in this novel is of course Tom Sawyer. Readers probably view Tom as a clever boy. I think most people like him because of this trait because of his ability to outwit people in order to get his own fun out of things. For example, Aunt Polly tries to confront Tom about who stole her Jam. Tom escapes the house and goes to skip school. During the day he gets into a fight.
