This is where there is a turn of actions, which leads to the falling action .Her greediness, causes her to suffer pointlessly. She misplaces the necklace with the mindset that it is a diamond necklace, and goes through a lot of difficulty to repay Mrs. Forestire. She moves to a more inexpensive, shabbier apartment than the comfortable one she once had. She gives up her maid and does all the tough work herself and ends up looking like an old woman. This is a consequence, or an effect but the choice that she made served as a blessing in disguise. The larger irony in the story is that the necklace is not genuine and Mathilda suffers so much because thinks it is a diamond necklace and buys a necklace worth 36 thousand francs to return it. In doing that she changes from having enough ownership and living a relaxed life to a life of sadness. It was here that greediness that made her think it was a diamond necklace since she would have settled for nothing less. You see, before, Mathilda was a quite money-oriented obsessed person, who longed for the possessions that she thought made a woman.
