...y it would get to be too much and we knew that we had to wake up our parents. How they could sleep in on Christmas morning just baffled us. Then when I was about 7 or 8, under the Christmas tree that was covered with all our multicolored glass balls, hand painted wooden ornaments, and the new gold ornaments engraved with our names and the year, laid a box amongst all the others. Of course, no one else would have jumped to the conclusion that it contained the glamorous Barbie that I so dearly wanted. I, however, had stared at that boxed long and hard every time we went shopping at the "Big N" store. There it was, about a foot long and 4 or 5 inches wide, wrapped in pretty paper and topped with a brightly colored bow. All my plea's to my mother had went unheard, but Santa knew I wasfinally old enough. Of course, we had to wait for our parents. As if we hadn't already waited long enough, we had to wait again. They took forever! They had to go to the bathroom, "hurry, hurry." Then they stopped at the kitchen to get their coffee. Dang, that stupid old percolator was so slow. Didn't they know we had important business to tend to? The gifts were waiting. Breakfast? "No, we're not hungry." Both my two brothers were eyeing the coffee cake Mom had prepared the night before and I don't think they appreciated my speaking for them. Finally, we were in the living room. A little chit chat, wishing each other Merry Christmas, and we were off and unwrapping. So there I sat in a sea of brightly colored gift wrapping strewn about the floor, I couldn't even tell you what else I got that year. Me and Barbie were together at last. Of course, the first thing I did was rip her clothes off and check out her body. For the longest time I thought I was going to grow up and have a pair of rock hard cones that never moved, sticking out of my chest. Oh the fun I had over the years with Barbie. Of course, after that I got all kinds of Barbie type dolls. There was skipper, Ken and The Sunshine Family (they came with a truck that they sold produce out of, or something like that). Mom didn't like the idea of spending lots of money on Barbie clothes so one of her friends that sewed made Barbie sized dresses, which I received one year.
