How has MTV influenced U.S. culture?
... “Baby Boom” generation see MTV as deviant and destroying the youth by putting to many materialistic and not enough moral things into their heads. I agree to a point but I think that MTV has really helped make the “MTV generation” think in new ways, challenge everyday happenings, and be more involved in the community. For example the “Rock the Vote” campaign makes young adults realizes they need to be active in the community by voting in political campaigns. Also the show, “Made” shows that you can become what you want to be or what you want to accomplish by hard work and dedication. MTV has greatly influenced another aspect in the community in the past 20 years: sexuality. In reading about sexuality (chapter seven) I think that MTV has definitely helped and hurt our culture and views about sex. Many of the girls and female actresses are very thin and beautiful and many of the boys and male actors are strong and handsome in various shows on MTV. This shows an unrealistic view of what most people look and act like in everyday life and shows everyone being the same instead of being individuals. Also shows like, “I Want a Famous Face” shows people having plastic surgery to look like a famous celebrity. What is this telling our youth? That you are not great and unique the way you are and you have to be very drastic and change yourself if there is one thing that you don’t like about the way you look? But looking at it from an...
