So many books were dumped into the river that the water turned black from the ink of the books. Christians took over Spain in 1492, which was another wave of destruction. More than one million volumes of Muslim works on arts, science, and philosophy were burnt. Millions of books must have perished and so did the accomplishments of many scientists and scholars. If these books had survived they possibly could have changed the path of history. Only a tiny portion of accessible Arabic scientific texts have been studied, and it will take many more years to discover more of the contributions of Muslim scientists to the history of ideas. Emperor Theodosius II ruined North African schools and ordered to have the famous library in Alexandria to be demolished also. Byzantine Emperor Zeno, closed the Edessa school, and Justinian closed the Platonic School in Athens and several in Alexandria.
