Out of all the herding dogs in France, the Beauceron is the most popular and it is chosen over many others. These dogs typically herd only sheep or cattle, but they are also known to herd horses if necessary. These dogs are almost entirely unknown outside of France (American Kennel Club). The second type of Miscellaneous breed is called Plotts and is originally from Germany. This dog is known for its keen hunting ability, as the Beauceron is known for its strong herding abilities. Although the dogs were originally from Germany, they began to be bred in the United States. In the US the dogs were used to hunt bear and other small game. Although this is small prey, Plotts today still bring in big game as in deer, bear, mountain lions, and boar. It can travel great distances in a short time over any terrain and has a very keen sense of smell, which helps it to track animals.
