The ring is the one symbol that represents the importance of a marriage, and Edna is displaying that she does not agree with this marriage when she steps on her wedding ring. Edna constantly dreams about Robert and has times when he is the only thing she can think about. Edna?s would have a terrible life living like this. She would constantly be unhappy and be thinking about how life could have been if Robert and chosen to stay with her. On page 98 its explains how Edna had ?not noticed how he (Robert) looked - only felt his presence?. Edna would also not be able to pay full attention to her kids and to her relationship with them because they are with a man that she does not fully love. Life with Leonce would be a very rocky and unstable road for Edna to travel. All of this is evident on page 46 of The Awakening it says, ?She sought him (Robert) everywhere, in others she had induced to talk about him.? Edna has one other legit option other than suicide and going back to be with Leonce again. She could always move away to another town far away from her own now and start an entire new life. This option serves many upsides and downfalls. If Edna were to move away she would be basically free of all the scrutiny that surrounded her, but she would be forced to leave her past life behind. That life includes her kids that she does love and her friends and family. Her life would have a gapping hole without her kids and she would think about them constantly. It would also be hard to find another love and create a relationship with that man because of her past with Robert, and would Edna be stable enough to survive a relationship and not have a secret love affair again with another man? These are many questions that would serve great difficulty in her new life. Also Edna?s past could catch up to her new home wherever she goes. People could eventually find out about her past events and think less of her as a person making it harder for her to become close...
