The Simple man
...fe is mainly shaped by believe of incest. Family is very important in both society but is soon corrupted when the outside world invades the society. The outside world can be describe as a higher level of intelligence compared to the society. The knowledge that the outside world brings to the society is though to be helpful but actually all it does is slowly disintegrates the society. Each society is affected by the outside world differently. It not only affects the society alone but it affects individuals in the novel. One of the characteristic that both novel share is the element of foreshadowing. Before any outside forces are introduced to the society, it is foreshadowed through an event. In “Things fall Apart” the arrivals of the locust foreshadowed the arrival of the white commissionaires. These missionaries who came to the village of Umuofia were from Europe. Their main objective is to convert them into Christians and introduce a new style of life. For many years the Umuofia tribe has lived peacefully and happily long with their family under their system of believe and tradition. After the commissionaires arrived, new style of life was introduce to them and most important new religion was taught. The tribe’s old fashion of life and belief was told that it is out of date and that what they bring is better. Teaching them new techniques for survival and teaching them outside knowledge. Some individuals still stand and debate weather to follow or to resist. The new way of life that the Europeans bring has given many followers a more enjoyable life and it was hard for any to resist, convincing many to join. People of the tribe started to forget their own traditions and style of life. Already the tribe has begun to disintegrate, the society is destroyed and is converted. One amongs the individuals who strongly defies the new political party and new religion is Okonkwo. Okonkwo who is the main protagonist of the novel resists the new way of life that is being taught. He finds it weak and womanly to join them, he will be considered a woman if he is to follow. Okonkwo becomes aggravated to see his tribe become converted, he could not sit back and watch. By the time he tries to form an up rise against the commissionaires it was to late. The majority of his tribe has become adapted to the new style of life and did not want to go back to the old. The heart of Umuofia is destroyed and so is Okonkwo. Okonkwo at the end commits suicide which symbolizes death of Umuofia. In “One hundred years of Solitude”, arrival from the outside world can be easily predicted by the idea of Aureliano Triste to build a railroad that would connect to the outside world. After the railroad was build, Macondo now has a direct connection to the outside world. People from across the land started moving in, including prostitutes and newcomers.
