positive and negative impacts of tourism in an LEDC
...spent may have been better spent elsewhere. Another disadvantage is that some people in the right industries benefit but other people may be worse off as traditional industry is often lost. A lot of tourists don’t always respect traditional cultures and these cultures can be broken down as a result of tourism. As said before, a LEDC is a less economically developed county. This means that there are also more economically developed countries (MEDC’s). Much of the profit in LEDC’s goes overseas to MEDC’s. This is another disadvantage. Lastly, the LEDC’s can rely on tourism too heavily and fail to develop other industries. Then if something goes wrong (e.g. war) they have lost everything. Kenya is a LEDC and tourism in Kenya is a good example of outweighing the negative against the positive aspects. The Kenyan government has encouraged tourism in Kenya because of many advantages. Money comes from overseas into Kenya and farmers have a larger market for their produce. Local people in Kenya can make and sell souvenirs to tourist and this gains money. Also, the farmland is lost when hotels are built on it. Some farmers may lose their jobs and local food supply is reduced. Other farmers start growing more expensive ‘European’ food to supply tourists, therefore less local food is produced. There is also harm to the environment due to tourism. There is increased demand for water for pools, showers, toilets, etc. This puts pressure on the existing water supply. Also, additional pressure on sewage systems and garbage disposal is a problem. Sewage and garbage pollutes the land and sea because the existing system cannot cope with it. The wildlife is being harmed as well. Wildlife disapp...
