The effects of myths on families
...ily consists of a working father, a homemaker mother, a son, and a daughter. These images typically define what is referred to as the “box”. The box is anything inside this ideal of a family. This ideal is exlemprary in “What We Really Miss About the 1950s”. However, as many already know, this type of family rarely ever occurs outside of The Donna Reed Show and Leave it to Beaver. A more accurate portrayal of family life can be seen mostly in the story “Looking for Work” by Gary Soto. These myths can lead to problems for those that do not fit in to the “Box” that society has created. Bebe Moore Campbell demonstrates the stress that desiring to be accepted as the cultural normal can create when she threatened her teacher as a child. In my opinion, society should accept others for their differences and embrace them instead of shunning them. Be it this is far from occouring, it is taking place more and more in society than we know. The excerpt from “Talking Freaks” shows that there are ways for people to rationally express themselves and attempt to work their problems out in a rational manner.
