As Good As It Gets
...and opinionated, he tends to hurt people’s feelings a lot without intending to. All these unusual habits that Marvin has picked up due to his disorder, have caused him to lead a very strange life. People are constantly staring at him and some even fear him because of his grouchy and bizarre behaviors. Greg Kinnear plays Simon Bishop, Marvin’s homosexual neighbor. When Simon gets brutally beaten he needs to be hospitalized, leaving his dog with Marvin. To make matters worse, the waitress that serves him every morning doesn’t show up to work. These two things really throw Marvin off while he has to learn how to deal with the mishap. The only person that can actually tolerate Marvin’s rudeness and eccentric habits is a waitress named Carol Connelly, who is played by Helen Hunt. Carol works at the diner that Marvin goes to for breakfast on a daily basis. It is difficult for him to eat out because he has very little trust in places when it comes to germs and things being how he’s used to. When he goes to eat at the diner and finds out that Carol isn’t there he is very confused and disgruntled. The reason Carol isn’t at work is because her son is very sick. Marvin goes to great lengths in order to get her back to work. He goes as far as paying for the medical care and her son’s needs in order for him to remain as healthy as possible. While it seems like a very nice gesture, Carol is somewhat thrown off by his actions. She can’t quite understand why a stranger is doing this. Marvin spends most of his time locked away in his apartment trying to write. During the film, not one person is shown or portrayed to be Marvin’s friend or relative even. It seems that he is very much alone and has very little social interaction. Once he has to take care of Simons dog he begins acting a bit more social. The dog becomes somethin...
