Uniforms should be abolished

...f uniforms are not worn in the proper way, students’ dressing can be corrected thus instilling discipline in the student himself and throughout the school. There have been many reports on students dressing inappropriately to school. In countries such as United States of America, students go to class with body piercing, tattoos and in skimpy dresses. Even though these students constitute a minority but peer influence cannot be overlooked. Therefore we can see that the school will face increased difficulty to instill discipline in students if uniforms are abolished. In Wales, Successive Secretaries of State for Education and the Chief Inspector of Schools have backed the idea that not only do uniforms improve the appearance of children, it also raises students’ performance in school. This is because school uniforms are good for discipline and school ethos, hence giving pupils a real sense of identity with their school and they perform better in their studies. The purpose of a uniform is to give people a sense of identity in their community. I believe that uniforms make all people, no matter their backgrounds, equal. Uniforms serve to differentiate a group of people from the others. It is easy to identify fellow colleagues or school mates from others. During the war, soldiers identify their fellow country mates through uniforms. A teacher will have difficulty distinguishing her students on a fieldtrip if they are all dressed in different clothing. In addition, uniforms exist not only in schools but in other areas of life as well, such as the army, hospitals and banks. Professional organisations have certain dress codes which are similar to uniforms. We can always find that in majority of the service sectors, the employees wear uniforms. The reason behind it is simple. Consumers are able to seek help from these staff in uniform readily. Although an organisation badge may serves the purpose of giving the people a sense of identity, its significance cannot be compared to uniforms which instill identity and honour in the employees. Furthermore, uniforms give people a sense of pride. Through wearing uniforms, it will enhance one's sense of belonging to their various communities. It promotes integration amongst those who share the same pride and identity. For instance in schools, having a uniform remove the pressure to keep up...
