In 1808, members of congress from the North and the South, voted to abolish slavery from overseas, however the domestic slave trade continued to be on the rise. The cotton gin introduction helped the South make a big profit and increased the need for slaves. This made slavery an important part of the southern economy. To a southern plantation owner, slavery turned into a question of money and power, which they felt bound to protect. The North was in the growing of industrialization, this brought immigrants from Europe in search of freedom. The people in the North found it more suitable to pay a wage for a service. This would mean that the owner of the company would not have to arrange for living quarters and clothing its employees as the plantation owners of the South had to do for the slaves. Some of the groups in the North wanted to abolish slavery due to the immoral nature of slavery itself. Some of those groups believed that slavery was wrong and that the Federal Government should abolish it all together. Some of these groups caused problems for some southerners. John Brown’s seizure of Harpers Ferry caused many southern states to make plans for more effective militias for internal southern defense. Other groups in the North either had no opinion or thought it would be bad for business to abolish slavery. The manufacturing of cotton in the South was done primarily by slaves and if there were no slaves, then there would be no cotton sold in the North to use in the textile industry.
