stem cell

...reat infertility; five to nine week old embryos or fetuses obtained through elective abortion; embryos created through IVF for research purposes; embryos created through cloning or somatic cell nuclear transfer”(Schaefar 2). People believe these methods to be very immoral because it kills the embryo. But, these embryos are obtained through means that if they weren’t used for this cause, they would be discarded entirely (Schaefar 3). So, why not use these embryos that were going to die anyways, to aid someone that is already alive. In conclusion, Stem-cells can be very affective in curing many diseases. Stem cells can also be obtained without hurting anyone. Along with the use of embryos, adult tissue, umbilical cord blood, placenta, and adult bone marrow can be used to generate stem cells (Five years later 1). Also, embryos can be made from donated egg cells from a female. People may argue that this is still killing the embryos, but in fact this is the same thing as the menstruation cycle in a since. This is because an egg outside of the body would have know chance of becoming anything, so by the scientist taking these unwanted eggs, they can put them to good rather than leave them to waste. If stem cells were to be legalized many of these obtaining methods would be used to reduce the amount of embryos needed. “The White House fact sheet setting forth the President's policy states: federal funds will only be used for research on existing stem cell lines that were derived (1) with the informed consent of the donors; (2) from excess embryos created solely for reproductive purposes; and (3) without any financial inducements to the donors. 6 The President directed NIH to examine the derivation of all existing stem cell lines and create a registry of those lines. Pursuant to this new policy, no federal funds will be used for: (1) the derivation or use of stem cell lines derived from newly destroyed embryos; (2) the creation of any human embryos for research purposes; or (3) cloning of human embryos for any purposes. The new policy replaces previously issued stem cell guidelines and policies (Remarks by the President 2).” This means that any donations will have to be totally voluntary. So this takes us to our constitutional rights of property. We have the right to property and the right to do with it, as we please, so by taking away the ability to donate parts of our bodies to science would totally contradict this inalienable right. In conclusion, opposed to contrary belief, something does not have to die in order for a stem cell to be obtained. Lastly Stem-cells can be used to prevent genetically inherited diseases. Injecting embryonic stem cells (ESCs) into female mice partially corrects congenital heart defects in their future offspring, a new study has found, suggesting that stem cells may be able to cure genetic defects indirectly. Where the ESCs were injected into female mice that later became pregnant, the cells did not cross the placenta and so appeared to cure the congenital defect “from a distance”. “Cells in the abdomen of the treated mothers were secreting factors that crossed the placenta,” says Robert Benezra, one of the study’s authors. It was these proteins, or factors, that par...
