Discovering Why We Believe What We Do and How We Are Destroying the World.
... other living things just because we have the means to make our lives full of luxury. We have taken over the world and now consider it in our power. We will decide if another living creature lives or dies. We will decide how much food we get. We have taken control of our lives in a way that takes us out of the laws of the Community of Life. We were taught a story...a story, one that because it is in the back of our minds at all times we have never been tempted to question. We even defend this way of thinking. We do not think that our creation story is a myth because we are the ones telling it and teaching it to our young. We are socializing our children to keep destroying the world. Our culture refuses to live in moderation so other creatures can live. Mother culture has taught us that there is only one right way to live and that is what we are doing now. We fill this world with our species pushing other living species out of the way so we can have land to farm and keep ourselves growing and prosperous. We have been socialized to believe this is the only way to live. Mother culture as Ishmael says in the novel, has taught us to discard what the hunter-gatherers did in the past. We learned to look down upon that way of life and think of it as uncivilized and miserable. We think that the world is ours and that we have a right to do as we please with Earth. We learn that the world belongs to us. We get this impression from various social forces such as school, peer groups, family, and the mass media. We have been socialized to take on the role of dominating the world and all other species that to do anything else for some people is just unheard of. On the other hand the culture known as Leaver believe the opposite. The Leaver culture is almost extinct the world today. They are a culture that are hunter-gatherers. They do not try to take what ever they can from the world around them but leave space and food to other living creatures so all living things have a chance to grow and advance. When their children are born their culture teaches them that they must live in the laws of the community of life. Unlike the Takers they do not exempt themselves from the rules of competition by trying to take over the world. Leavers believe that they belong to the world and leave themselves in the hands of the Gods to take care of what ever comes about. Even though they still have the intelligence of Takers they do not use it to exploit and destroy other living things. Leaver cultures are even known to many as being subcultures because their values do not correspond with the majority of the world. The Leavers teach that you are supposed to treat the world as if it is special and not like it is dispensable to them. Takers are destroying this world because they believe that the laws of the Community of Life to do not apply to them. They are socialized by all the social forces that this is the way we are supposed to live. Takers do no care about what their actions are doing to this world. We are depleting the Ozone layer with our pollution, we are killing animals unnecessarily just because they are pests. We are overpopulating every nation to the point where we are going to run out of room to put everybody. This does not concern most people though they believe this huge problem will somehow ...
