Government - Ok. senate race
...igorously fought for federally mandated programs such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). According to Brad Carson we must raise standards of excellence for our nation’s children, and that we will achieve this through more government funding for NCLB. He also realizes that the realities of implementing these standards are difficult. IDEA provides federal funding for the education of children with disabilities and requires schools, as a condition for the receipt of such funds, to provide a free appropriate public education to children with disabilities. Brad Carson will, if elected for the senate seat in Oklahoma, also help raise taxes (indirectly) by supporting the Higher Education Act. The higher education act allows access, to all Oklahomans, to colleges with the help of federal funding. (Brad Carson U.S. Congress) After September 11th, 2001, both Tom Coburn and Brad Carson have made a big portion of their campaign based on their beliefs and suggestions on what should have been done and what they will do in regards to foreign affairs and terrorism. While Tom Coburn was a member of congress he co-sponsored a legislation that prohibited foreign assistance to countries that have supported terrorism. He also voted for an anti-terrorism legislation that would impose the death penalty on anyone who attempted or committed acts of terrorism with the intent to kill. Coburn believes that the only effective way to get rid of terrorism is to destroy terrorists and their sponsors, such as the Taliban and Saddam Hussein, before they can launch additional attacks on the United States. Coburn fully believed in and supported President Bush’s leadership in both the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Once Bush’s leadership accomplished its goals in Afghanistan and Iraq, eliminating the Taliban in Afghanistan along with eliminating Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Coburn’s support for the President only increased. Although Coburn supports Bush’s actions he does not fully support The Patriot Act, this is because he believes that future Attorney Generals will abuse the powers that are given to them by The Patriot Act. (Issues: The War on Terrorism) Brad Carson did support Bush’s war with Iraq, yet he will not call it a successful mission until we are able to restore order to Iraq. Carson also knows that the old target of the war was to remove Saddam Hussein, and now that that has been accomplished the new focus should be on aiding in the development of a government that is in the best interest of the Iraqi people. Throughout Brad Carson’s time in congress he was a co-sponsor to several significant pieces of legislation addressing violence in the Middle East. (Brad Carson U.S. Congress. Foreign Affairs) After the September 11th attacks homeland security has been an important issue. Since Homeland Security is such a big topic it is a major portion of either candidate’s campaign. Tom Coburn thinks that the soldiers are being underpaid for what they are doing. Tom Coburn, while he was a congress representative, supported, multiple times, a National Missile Defense System. If he were to be elected he would continue his support for the National Missile Defense System, the reason for his support, on the NMDS, is because there ar...
