Abortion: Pro-Choice v. Pro-Life
...urture from a superior being to insure its survival (Northrop). Pro-life supporters attitude towards this issue rely a great deal on their ideological beliefs, which suggests abortions are morally wrong. They feel that terminating a pregnancy is murder and that goes against the Ten Commandments. Pro-life advocates generally turn to the biblical perspective when arguing abortion issues. “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well” (Psalms. 139.13-14). According to that scripture opponents ask, “If the unborn fetus is not a life, but rather a part of the woman’s body, then why did David acknowledge existence in the womb of his mother” (Northrop)? Pro-choice advocates believe in separation of the church and state, (which must be adhered to according to the Constitution) and say that biblical influences should not influence that of the law (“Arguments”). With their ideological beliefs prevailing, pro-life advocates consider any form of abortion methods used, a cruel and unjust act of murder. With the suction method, the cervix is paralyzed and opened and a tube with a sharp end is inserted. It is attached to a pump that tears the baby into pieces and sucks it into the pump. Dilatation and Curettage is uncommon. The doctor uses a loop like knife into the uterus and cut both the placenta and baby into little pieces and scrapes it out of the mother. Dilatation and Evacuation is used during the second trimester. A pliers-like took is used to tear the limbs of the baby. The spine must be snapped, and the skull crushed to remove them. The D&X also know as partial birth abortion is used for third trimester pregnancies. The baby is extracted in breech style until it is just inside the cervix. Scissors are inserted into the back of the baby’s neck and spread to open it. They then use a suction tool to remove the brain and the baby is delivered. The salt poisoning method using a strong saline solution injected into the amniotic sac. The baby inhales this chemical and is poisoned. It takes up to two days for the baby to die, and is delivered. This method sometime results in live births. The Prostaglandin Abortions are a three-part process. Two are injected as a shot and one is a vaginal suppository. The hormone causes the mother to go into labor and deliver the baby. It could be born alive, but is usually too small to survive(“Abortion Methods”). The C-Section abortion is used if the other forms of abortion are not successful during the third trimester. It is performed like a regular Caesarean Section. The baby, placenta, and amniotic sac are removed from the uterus. The C-Section abortion has resulted in a lot of live births (“Abortion Techniques”). Since these births do not have to be medically reported, there are no laws to protect the unwanted child. One obstetrician said that in a hysterotomy, “As the infant is lifted from the womb, he is only sleeping, like his mother. She is under anesthesia, and so is he. You want to know how they kill him? They put a towel over his face so he can’t breathe and by the time they get him to the lab, he is dead” (Sievright). There have been other medical officials who speak out against this form of abortion telling stories of live births, and the procedures that are taken to end the life. Pro-life activist also detest abortion methods because of the risks involved in them. Abortions can cause death by hemorrhage, infection, embolism, anesthesia and ectopic pregnancies. The also cause breast cancer. The risk of having cancer after a woman’s first abortion doubles, and continues to increase with the amount of abortions she has. It can also cause a host of other cancers such as Cervical, Ovarian, and Liver Cancer. Uterine Perforation is another risk posed by abortions. This can go undetected for an extended period of time. It can ultimately cause the woman to need a hysterectomy and she will not be able to bear children in the future. Cervical Lacerations may occur during the first term ab...
