He was acquitted of that charge and was released, however soon after his release Mandela learned of several peaceful demonstrators being massacred. It was at this point where he considered using guerrilla warfare against the government. In 1964 he was arrested for plotting to overthrow the government and was sentenced to life imprisonment along with seven others. While in prison he became a pillar of strength and resistance to his people. Despite opportunities, Mandela refused to compromise his cause to obtain his freedom. After President de Klerk was elected, he immediately released Mandela and Nelson Mandela soon became the president of the ANC. In 1993 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. In 1994, South Africa held its first multiracial election, and Mandela was elected President. He served until 1999. When discussing those who shaped culture and thought, few have fought as hard as Nelson Mandela. Through 27 years of selfless imprisonment, and then years of fighting oppression, Mandela became a symbol and a living hero for the people of Africa, and for people all over the world who value civil rights and liberties.
