Macbeth refuses and is “to afraid to think what [he has] done” and “look on’t again [he] dare not.” In Act III, Macbeth hires men to murder Banquo and Fleance. Macbeth admits “[his] fears in Banquo stick deep” and it is Banquo himself “whose being [he does] fear.” The murderers kill Banquo, but Fleance escapes. Macbeth’s fear grows when he learns that Fleance had escaped. His plan was perfect, but now he has “saucy doubts and fears.” Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, as king and queen, are now having an evening feast with guests. Macbeth proceeds to sit in his chair and is greeted by the ghost of Banquo. Macbeth is horrified of this “horrible shadow”, which the others do not see.
