Uncle Tom's Cabin
...she will never see her son again so she takes the risk of being killed because of fleeing rather than going to another plantation. She takes her fait into her own hands and runs with her son towards Canada. Eliza’s story was not one that happened very often. Most run away slaves were captured and often tortured for their attempt to escape. Another situation to prove that slaves really do feel is when the woman that is on the boat with Tom jumps over board because her baby is sold. She would rather die than live without her baby. Even Tom feels that this is an “unutterably horrible and cruel transaction”. The one truly touching way that Stowe proves that slaves know what things like loyalty was the way Uncle Tom always kept his word. He was never disloyal to his master, no matter what the circumstances. When Eliza wanted him to run away with her he could not bring himself to do it. He could not break the trust of his master and he said that it was not his masters fault that he was sold. He just accepted his fait. When his new master came to pick him up, he could only say, “give my love to Mas’r George” as they drove away. Luckily for Tom he was sold to another man who was as nice as his first master. There he met his daughter who thought that the slaves should be free. She was as closer to Tom than own mothers. They cared for one another without regards to what color their skin was. When he was later sold to his final master, Legree, who was mean and cruel, Tom could not bring himself to run away. He stood his ground and was beaten to death. He has the ability to forgive the unending list of brutalities enacted upon him. One really sad character was Topsy. It was Ophelia’s job to teach Topsy the Bible and who God is. It is extremely hard for Ophelia to accept the fact that Topsy could not fathom the idea of heaven and a God. All this poor child knew was to wash dishes, fetch water and wait on people. She knew nothing else, not even her own age or who her parents were. Throughout the novel a strong religious theme is present. Stowe makes Uncle Tom as a God driven man who will not sacrifice his religion for anyone. He was a very religious man who always told people to believe in the Lord if they had problems. Though he had many opportunities to betray his trusting masters he did what he thought the Lord would want him to do. When he was sold from one person to the next, the only thing that keeps his spirits up is reading his Bible. He reads it on a daily basis and whenever possible he tries to teach those around him about the word of God. He always tries to encourage his fellow frien...
